GWM Cannon Alpha, Tank 300 & 500 Hybrids Pulled Back Amid Safety Concerns
CANBERRA – The Federal Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications, Sport and the Arts has issued a recall notice for several of GWM’s hybrid models due to an electrical defect that could compromise vehicle performance and safety.
The recall affects 1,445 vehicles sold in 2025, including the GWM Cannon Alpha plug-in hybrid ute, the Tank 300 hybrid, and the Tank 500 hybrid and plug-in hybrid SUVs. According to the department, a manufacturing defect in the high-voltage wiring harness means the shielding ring may not be properly grounded.

This fault can reduce electromagnetic shielding effectiveness, potentially disrupting communication between the engine and transmission control systems. As a result, warning lights may activate, torque output may drop, and cooling performance of the hybrid system could be impaired. Authorities warn that these issues could increase the risk of accidents, posing serious danger to occupants and other road users.
