Three Chinese Car Brands Break Into Global Top 10 in 2025 Sales Rankings. The 2025 global automotive rankings were finalized after Stellantis Group released its financial report, confirming that Toyota, Volkswagen, Hyundai Motor, and General Motors retained the top four positions. Stellantis ranked fifth with over 5.4 million units sold. Chinese manufacturers gained ground, with BYD, SAIC, and Geely Holdings entering or climbing within the top ten, while Nissan dropped out. BYD rose to sixth place with 4.6 million vehicles sold, including 2.25 million electric vehicles—up 27.86% year-on-year—allowing it to surpass Tesla as the world’s top EV seller.

Government support played a major role in this rise. Data from China’s Ministry of Finance showed trade-in programs generated more than 2.6 trillion yuan in sales and benefited about 360 million consumers, with new-energy vehicles comprising nearly 60% of replacements. According to the China Passenger Car Association, China’s global automotive market share climbed to 35.6% in 2025, up from 34.2% in 2024. SAIC and Geely overtook Ford and Honda in the rankings, while Geely surpassed 4 million annual sales for the first time after five consecutive years of growth.

China also strengthened its dominance through production, exports, and technological influence. The China Association of Automobile Manufacturers reported record output of 34.53 million vehicles and sales of 34.4 million in 2025, keeping China the world’s largest auto market for a 17th straight year. New-energy vehicles exceeded 16 million units—over half of domestic sales—while exports topped 7 million, including 2.6 million EVs. Oliver Blume of Volkswagen Group emphasized that China is not only a major market but also a global innovation hub shaping standards in electric mobility, software, AI, and battery technology.
