Indus Motors Fights Back While Honda Struggles to Convert Sales Into Profits
Set against the long-standing dominance of Indus Motors, the rapid rise of Sazgar Engineering has disrupted traditional assumptions about Pakistan’s auto sector. In the June-25 quarter, Indus sold more than four times as many vehicles as Sazgar yet generated less than twice its post-tax profit, highlighting Sazgar’s exceptional margins. The newcomer’s higher per-unit earnings—about Rs9.8 million compared to Indus’ Rs5.9 million—reflect premium pricing and strong cost control, even after accounting for revenue contributions from its rickshaw segment.

By September, Indus began narrowing the gap as improved product mix and stronger pricing lifted margins from 13% to 17%, with profitability still roughly double Sazgar’s thanks to higher volumes. Meanwhile, Sazgar continued expanding steadily, with both sales and profits rising 27% while maintaining disciplined margins. By December-25, Sazgar’s financial performance remained resilient with only slight margin dips, whereas Indus had yet to release December results but was expected to retain market leadership with volumes near 11,000 units.
Positioned between these rivals, Honda Atlas Cars has seen strong volume recovery but weak profitability, with margins stuck around 8% and net margins near 2%. The broader trend suggests newer entrants—particularly those offering larger vehicles at premium prices—are achieving stronger unit economics. While Indus leverages scale and brand loyalty to defend its position, Sazgar’s superior per-unit profitability shows that high margins, not volume alone, can redefine competitive advantage in Pakistan’s evolving auto market.
