BYD Sales Surge in Germany and UK as Chinese Automaker Gains Ground in Europe

BYD Sees Explosive Growth in Europe’s Biggest Car Markets Despite Broader Slowdown

BYD recorded a sharp rise in sales across Europe’s two largest auto markets in January, with vehicle registrations jumping more than tenfold in Germany and more than doubling in the UK. In the UK, BYD sold 4,021 vehicles, led by the plug-in hybrid Seal U DM-i, which alone accounted for over 63% of the brand’s sales and ranked as the sixth best-selling model overall.

BYD Sales Surge in Germany and UK as Chinese Automaker Gains Ground in Europe

While plug-in hybrids dominated BYD’s UK performance, fully electric vehicles made up around 32% of registrations, reflecting strong consumer interest in hybrid options as overall UK auto sales rose modestly year-on-year.

In Germany, BYD registered 2,629 vehicles in January, an elevenfold increase from the same month last year, despite a month-on-month dip from December’s record levels. Unlike the UK, BYD’s German lineup is heavily focused on fully electric models, aligning with the country’s growing EV market share, which reached 22% in January even as total car sales declined. Across Europe, BYD continues to expand rapidly, though it has struggled in Nordic markets such as Norway and Sweden. The company has also begun trial production at its new plant in Hungary, aiming to strengthen its European presence and avoid high EU tariffs on Chinese-made vehicles.
